The winds, the tides and its geographical location, on the 28th meridian, 60 sea miles from the African coast, determine the climate of Gran Canaria.
According to a study written by Thomas Whitmore, manager of the climatological research department at the University of Syracusa (USA), published by Consumer Travel Publications in 1996, with the title "Pleasant Weather Ratings", Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is the city with the best climate in the world. This study analyses 600 cities from all over the world, selected by their popularity as tourist destination, basing in the climate variables in the course of a year. The microclimate in the south of the island, especially the area between Arguineguín and Mogán, is characterized by a nice and refreshing breeze during the summer, thanks to the trade winds, meanwhile in the winter time it is affected by the Atlantic cyclones, which give it a pleasant spring-like temperature. These constant temperatures, an ideal grade of humidity and the very little days of rain make this climate unique. The area between Arguineguín and Mogán is known to have one of the healthiest microclimates in the world, relieving respiratory diseases such as asthma or allergies, rheumatism, etc.
